Camping Safety Tips!

Choose Your Shelter and Site

Consider your age, physical limitations and medical needs.

Determine if you should stay in a tent, cabin or RV.

Determine what gear you need based on your site choice.

Keep Tabs on the Weather

Keep an eye on weather forecast before your trip.

Pack for bad weather regardless of forecasts.

Plan trips at least one month in advance.

Pack and Store Food Safely

Pack food in tight, waterproof containers and store in an insulated cooler.

Avoid food-borne illnesses by washing your hands often.

Separate raw foods from cooked foods.

Practice Fire Safety

Campfires should be at least 15 feet from tent walls, shrubs and trees.

Keep your fire small and never leave it unattended.

Always put your fire out before leaving or going to sleep.

Protect Yourself from Insects

Use insect repellent with DEET.

Check for ticks daily and wear long sleeves and pants when hiking.

Put dry clothes in dryer for 10 minutes on high heat to kill ticks on clothing.

Stay Aware of Allergies

Put an EpiPen or other prescribed medication in your first aid kit.

Watch out for dizziness, shortness of breath, and swelling around bug bites.

Keep Your Skin Safe from the Sun

Sunburns happen on both bright and cloudy days.

Seek shade and wear a hat and sunglasses.

Use broad-spectrum sunscreen and lip screen with at least SPF 15.

Stay Hydrated

Drink water often - don't wait until you're thirsty.

A good emergency kit includes a 3–5-day supply of bottled water.
